The 1st major museum in Europe dedicated to female artists exhibiting masterpieces from the Levett Collection is an unparalleled museum in Europe that repositions women in art history. The Levett Collection, featuring paintings, sculptures, photographs, and drawings exclusively created by female artists, offers a unique exhibition from impressionism to contemporary.
The idyllic setting of the Côte d'Azur’s Mougins was chosen by Christian Levett to establish his museum. Initially, it opened in 2011 as the Musée d'Art Classique de Mougins, and until the summer of 2023, it was a popular cultural destination showcasing the collection of antiques and classically inspired works by this former British investor with a passion for history and art.
However, the approach of the collector changed, and the museum followed. Christian Levett confides: "In the almost 30 years I've been collecting art, my tastes have evolved, so I think it's time for the museum to evolve too". On 21 June 2024, FAMM (Femmes Artistes du Musée de Mougins) unveiled to the public over a hundred works created by more than 80 artists from all over the world.
From the 19th century to the present day, the exhibition takes a viewer on a journey from visionary Impressionists to daring Surrealists, from tumultuous abstraction to frank depictions of the human body, before finally inviting the audience to explore the intimate subjects and raw emotions expressed by the women artists of the 21st century.
The FAMM is proud to offer a platform dedicated to highlighting the work of women artists. This museum is one of a number of initiatives aimed at redressing the historical imbalances in the recognition and appreciation of these artists. The artists on show are enriching and rewriting the grand narrative of art history.
