In the Eye of the Storm

Don’t miss a chance to see Ukrainian Modernism in Vienna!Belvedere opened In the Eye of the Storm on 23 February 2024.

This exhibition is the first comprehensive presentation of Ukrainian art from the first half of the 20th century to be shown outside Ukraine. While safeguarding a lost treasure trove of avant-garde work, it showcases a generation of talented artists who significantly contributed to early 20th-century art.

The modernist movement in Ukraine unfolded against a backdrop of collapsing empires, the First World War, the fight for independence, and the eventual establishment of Soviet Ukraine. Despite the upheavals, the period was marked by bold artistic experiments and a flourishing of art, literature and theatre in Ukraine.

In the Eye of the Storm brings together the work of such artists as Kazymyr Malevych, Alexandra Exter and El Lissitzky, as well as Oleksandr Bohomazov, Mykhailo Boichuk and many others, each of them left an indelible mark on the art and culture of Ukraine and the world. The Belvedere also focuses on art from around 1900 in order to illustrate connections with the development of Art Nouveau.

This exhibition is curated by Konstantin Akinsha and Katia Denysova together with Maryna Drobotiuk and Olena Kashuba-Volvach (both from the National Art Museum of Ukraine, Kyiv). Assistant Curator at Belvedere - Miroslav Haľák.

It is worth recalling that the exhibition was initiated by Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, and supported by Museums for Ukraine, and already shown in Brussels. The next stop will be London: from 29 June 2024, the exhibition will be on view at the Royal Academy of Arts. In Vienna it will run until 2 June 2024.
