The Ukrainian Museum in New York is hosting "Tatlin: Kyiv", the first-ever solo exhibition of Volodymyr Tatlin in North America. This showcase runs until April 27, 2025, offering a rare opportunity to explore the avant-garde legacy of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
A pioneering avant-garde artist and founder of Constructivism, he was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, but lived and worked in Kyiv from 1925 to 1927. The exhibition reconstructs the artist’s Kyiv studio and showcases the works created during this period, offering an immersive experience of the environment where his art was conceived and developed for the first time.
The show aims to serve as an educational catalyst for the decolonization of Ukrainian art, reframing Tatlin’s legacy within the context of Ukrainian cultural history. By shedding light on his Kyiv years, the exhibition contributes to the broader preservation and recognition of Ukrainian artistic heritage. In addition, Tatlin: Kyiv reexamines a major gap in the discourse of art history to include Tatlin’s work of the late 1920s.
For the “Tatlin: Kyiv” exhibition, the Ukrainian Museum in New York has loaned works from the National Museum of Art of Ukraine, the Dovzhenko Center, the Museum of Theatrical, Musical, and Film Arts, the Vernadskiy Library, and the Adamovskiy Foundation.
