The Person: Maria Levitska

Maria Levitska has created several thousand sketches for stage scenery and costumes for operas, ballets and drama performances.

Ukrainian stage artist, the Director of Scenography with the National Opera of Ukraine, Maria Levitska, was born in Kyiv to the creative family of artist Iryna Levitska and radiophysics professor Serhiy Levitskyi. She is a graduate of the Academy of Arts of Ukraine (National Academy of Visual Arts and Architecture), the department of painting, scenography section, workshop of professor Danylo Lieder.

At the start of her career, Maria Levitska worked as an artist-producer and costumes designer with Dovzhenko Film Studio, where she had a chance to work with Roman Balayan ("The Kiss") and director Oleh Fialko ("The Return of the Butterfly") and many others. Since 1989 Levitska has been working at the position of the Director of Scenography with the National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine. For these years, she has created stage scenery and costumes for more than 160 various performances in Ukraine and beyond.

Maria Levitska favours the genres of easel painting, graphics and the technique of batik. She participated in more than thirty art exhibitions, including several personal exhibitions in Ukraine, Japan, Canada, Poland and Israel.

Maria Levitska is a member of the Union of Theatre Artists of Ukraine, a member of the Union of Cinema Makers of Ukraine, an Academician of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine (2017), she was awarded the Order of Princess Olga (2nd gr.).

In 1995, she was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine, in 2003 she became a laureate of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine, and in 2006 Maria received the title of People's Artist of Ukraine. Besides, she was praised internationally with the Order of the "Star of Italy" (formerly Star of Italian Solidarity) award, the highest state award of the Italian Republic ever awarded to foreign citizens.
