Tropa’s solo exhibition in Monaco

"I recently had the pleasure of attending Francisco Tropa’s exhibition at Villa Paloma in Monaco. The showcase offered a profound exploration of materiality, time, and perception, inviting viewers into his intricate world of sculptural forms and conceptual depth." - Natalia Shpytkovska. The Portuguese artist Francisco Tropa’s latest exhibition, "Paésine," is running until April 21, 2025, at Villa Paloma, NMNM.

Specially designed for the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, the exhibition brings together a previously unseen collection of sculptures, drawings, films and light displays. The exhibition aims to explore the subtle links between nature and technology.
The exhibition draws its name from "pietre paesine," or landscape stones, whose natural geological patterns evoke painted landscapes, blurring the lines between figuration and abstraction. This concept resonates deeply with Tropa's exploration of the interplay between nature and technique, focusing on how images appear and are perceived.

Visitors can immerse themselves in a realm where archaeology, ethnology, and contemporary art converge, challenging conventional perceptions of history and form. The collection provides visitors with an immersive experience, transforming the museum space into a ‘Platonic cave’. The artist gently revisits the origins of sculpture, combining references to prehistoric versions of Venus, classical Pietà and contemporary minimalism.

“We find a certain purity in the origin of things. Through my work, I’m interested in finding these kinds of ideas so that I can rework them,” says the artist.
Notably, Princess Alexandra of Hanover and her husband Ben-Sylvester Strautmann attended the exhibition's opening, underscoring its cultural significance.
The exhibition is open until April 21, 2025Villa Paloma, 56 boulevard du Jardin Exotique, Monaco
