Today Art Basel is one of the top art fairs in the world, with locations not only in Basel, but also in Miami Beach, Hong Kong, and now premiered in Paris. Art Basel has become not only a magnet for true art connoisseurs and celebrities, but a fair with lavish parties, and a booster for some of the most iconic events in the history of contemporary art.
History of Art Basel
First and foremost, it is Art Basel’s tradition of building long-standing partnerships with visionary galleries from around the world. During its first years, Art Basel established an exemplary reputation for presenting the best contemporary works from leading galleries and began attracting major collectors, such as Don and Mera Rubell, who attended their first Art Basel in 1979.
From the start, the event had drawn attention from American exhibitioners and gallerists, and the American interest was pivotal in making Art Basel into what it looks today. It offered the opportunity for artists from the US to show off their works in Europe and what is more, to sell them to this profitable market.

By 2022, the fair secured 70,000 visitors over the days, presenting 289 galleries from 40 countries. It was in 2019 when Maurizio Cattelan taped a solitary banana to Perrotin gallery’s booth wall with a piece of metallic duct tape.
For more than half-century, Art Basel has become not only a magnet for true art connoisseurs and celebrities, but a fair with lavish parties, and a booster for some of the most iconic events in the history of contemporary art.
