About the artist

Maria Shubina was born in Kyiv in 1979. She graduated from the National Academy of Architecture and Arts. Main directions of her practice are painting and graphics. Life partner and collaborator in the work of Illia Chychkan - one of the key heroes of the artistic life of the country in the early 1990s, she became a famous artist in Ukraine, switching to painting from architecture. The media presents her as a successful artist and party queen. Creates bright things and images in works. In early, provocative series, she often depicted naked models using her own image. Problematises the gender topic, image transformations, globalism. Winner of the PinchukArtCentre special award (2009). Participant of the Arsenale Kyiv Biennale (2012).
